Talking to the Text, I saw/I thought, Quizzes, primary sources, discussions, graphic organizers, think aloud, cooperative learning
Short answer responses, drafting arguments, summaries, reports, editing
5 steps in test taking, handbook from text (assessment strategies), whole group response and discuss
Using graphs and maps that apply to content and teaching the skills to understand. What to look for…
At least a word a week. Our standards all stress the academic language so we are going to take the time to explain what each word means and keep a chart in our room as a reference for students.
When will you address the focus area?
Begining 1/25, all areas will be focused on each week in every social studies classroom. Each strategy will be combined with History content to support the CST and the standards, but extra attention will be paid to the skill set to prepare for the CAHSEE.
Needs
Time- Wednesdays and Thursdays will be used in part for our focus areas.
Additional paper- creating short answer responses and using history text to teach reading comprehension means more copies.... Also, easel paper would be helpful to create poster around the room.
A plan for students who do NOTHING!!!! They are bringing the class down! (suggestion – intervention as a whole group with admin. )
Accountability on the district!!!!! (Students who do not pass the CAHSEE should be required to attend a prep class over the summer put on by the district. Failure to show should require them to have a CAHSEE prep class as their Junior year elective)

Teach Students: Test Format and Prioritization of Sections based on how they affect the overall score
Focus Department-wide on a positive, solution-oriented approach to helping individuals demonstrate proficiency. Students will be encouraged to rise to the challenge of individual achievement--as opposed to being pressured to score well for the staff, school, or district.

How will you address focus areas?
Writing Strategies: Already require written work/critique/review every quarter, will aim assignments to various forms of writing. Example: one quarter to Biographical narrative of someone in our discipline, an expository prompt on the historical importance of a piece of art or music, Analyze a work (critique, heritage, tradition, attitudes and beliefs) and a persuasive essay on why this piece of art/music is important or special. Required to use some of the academic language or words on the Cashee lists.
Reading Strategies: Using CDE recommended readings and when our sophomore English teachers are doing that novel or poetry unit, we can bring up our discipline related information (example: Cannery Row and photography, Romeo and Juliet w/ Ballet or opera, historical novels w/ the art work of the period)
Math Standards: Stress the connections and concepts of mathematics already covered and implemented in elective courses. Continue to expand mathematical standards at use in elective courses.
When will you address the focus area?
Start Immediately
Daily implementation of standards if possible or during any "down" time in elective classes
Periodically set times for practice tests and strategies
Needs:
Word Lists and Reading excerpts and examples
Practice tests and release questions
When the 10th grade English classes are reading a novel or poetry unit – so that if we have art, music, drama, photography that is useful, we can supplement (example: Cannery Row and Photography, Romeo and Juliet – opera and ballet, Werther – opera, Brown Girl in the Ring – shouts and playparties). A Joyful Noise is used in Chorus to introduce counterpoint.
